API management: $/million calls — and base fees

API gateway prices look small ("$1/million calls") — but Apigee charges ~$365/mo environment fee before a single call, and Zuplo's cheap $25/mo tier overage costs ~$1,000/extra million. The calculator reveals total cost at your call volume.

⚠︎ Three traps: base fee, overage price, and "contact us"

Apigee environment fee (Base ~$365/mo) makes it ~$565/mo at 10M calls when AWS HTTP API costs $10. Zuplo is cheap under 100k calls but overage ~$1,000/1M — move the slider and watch the curve bend. Kong, Tyk, and Cloudflare API Shield do not publish key prices → quote rows. Gravitee ($2,500/mo flat, unlimited calls) beats per-call models only at hundreds of millions. Data transfer is always on top (egress comparison).

How to choose?

Small/medium API: AWS API Gateway HTTP API ($1/1M) or Azure Consumption (1M free) — but remember vendor lock-in. Self-host: KrakenD or Kong Gateway OSS = €0 software + VPS. Developer experience first: Zuplo, if volume stays small. For enterprise needs, request quotes (Kong/Tyk/Apigee subscription) and compare yourself — no public prices.
