Load balancers: managed load balancing

When one server is not enough, a load balancer distributes traffic across many — and provides high availability. We compare managed cloud load balancers by monthly price, type (L4/L7/DNS) and included traffic. The cheapest are a fraction of big-cloud usage-based pricing.

How to choose?

Fixed-price (Hetzner, UpCloud, DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode) are predictable for small and medium projects — you know the monthly price upfront. Hetzner is cheapest (€5.39) with a Helsinki datacenter; UpCloud is Finnish and offers free data transfer, which matters at high traffic. Cloudflare is a different type: DNS-based load balancing and failover, not traditional L4/L7.

Usage-based (AWS ALB, Google Cloud) charge hourly plus processed data/load (LCU, GB), so the real monthly price depends on traffic — more expensive at low load, but they scale massively and integrate with the same cloud's other services. Their €/mo is a baseline estimate, not a fixed price.
