⚠︎ Read the fine print: versions, limits and renewal price

30-day version history (Backblaze default, Carbonite) = deleted or encrypted file disappears from backup within a month — longer history costs extra. "Unlimited" limits: Jottacloud throttles after 5 TB, Backblaze does not cover NAS drives, Carbonite not videos automatically. First-year discount: iDrive −30% applies only to the first year — calculator uses renewal price. Acronis trap: cheapest tier includes no cloud at all. Consumer clouds are a different use case: consumer cloud storage.

How to choose?

One machine, lots of data: Backblaze Personal ($99/yr unlimited) — buy 1-year version history (+$24/yr), cheap insurance. Multiple machines: iDrive (5 TB shared across unlimited machines). Technical user: restic/Duplicati + B2 (~$84/yr/TB) — full control, unlimited versioning, encryption with your own keys. EU data: Jottacloud (Norway) or Synology C2 (EU location selectable, verify pricing).
