Managed Kubernetes: control plane + nodes

Managed Kubernetes runs the control plane (the cluster brain) for you. The comparison focuses on control plane cost (many providers offer it free โ€” you pay only for nodes) and the cheapest worker node. The bar shows cluster starting price (control plane + one cheapest node). Large clouds (EKS, GKE) charge ~$73/mo for management alone.

How to choose?

Independent clouds (Linode, Scaleway, Vultr, DigitalOcean, UpCloud) offer the control plane free โ€” you pay only for worker nodes, so a small cluster starts at the cheapest node alone ($5โ€“12/mo). UpCloud ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ฎ is Finnish and runs in Helsinki; Linode has the lowest starting price ($5/mo node).

AWS EKS and Google GKE charge ~$73/mo for the control plane alone ($0.10/h) on top of nodes โ€” a significant fixed cost for a small cluster, but justified if you need deep AWS/GCP integration and massive scale. GKE has a datacenter in Hamina (Finland). In production, remember HA control plane: on independents it costs extra ($40โ€“60/mo), on large clouds it is included in the management fee.
