Search services: paying for queries, records, or hardware?

Three pricing worlds: Algolia bills both queries and records (a large product catalog costs money even if nobody searches), infra-based options (Typesense/Elastic/OpenSearch) bill for a cluster 24/7 even with no queries, and flat-rate options (Meilisearch) are predictable. For static sites, Pagefind runs search in the browser for free.

⚠︎ What do you actually pay for?

Algolia double billing: a 200,000-product catalog costs ~$80/mo in records before the first search. Infra models: a Typesense cluster bills nights and weekends — cheap only at high utilization; HA triples cost (×3 nodes). Serverless minimums: AWS OpenSearch Serverless requires 2 OCUs ≈ $350/mo — not for light use. Vector search for RAG: see also vector databases.

How to choose?

Static site/documentation: Pagefind — €0, no server. Small app: Meilisearch self-host (MIT, €0 + VPS) or Typesense Cloud (~$7/mo). E-commerce: Algolia leads on UX but calculate record costs for your catalog size; Meilisearch Cloud is more predictable. Log/analytics search at scale: Elastic/OpenSearch — budget hundreds per month.
