How to choose?
Start with free tiers: for most small sites the free tier is enough. UptimeRobot (50 monitors, 5 min) is exceptionally generous, and Better Stack offers a free 30-second interval plus a polished status page. Only Pingdom and Uptime.com are paid-only.
Check interval determines how fast an outage is detected: 1 minute or 30 seconds matters for production sites compared to 5 minutes. SMS alerts are almost always extra or credit-based — if you need the phone to ring immediately, check SMS pricing. Status page (public "is the service up" page) is included in most plans. Note: Healthchecks.io and Cronitor specialize in cron/scheduled job monitoring (dead man's switch) — a different use case than continuous ping. Prices in dollars, converted to € at ~0.88.
SSL monitoring: who alerts on certificate expiry?
An expired SSL certificate takes down a site with browser warnings — and that alert is usually free as part of uptime monitoring. StatusCake, Better Stack, Hyperping, Cronitor, and Site24x7 monitor certificate expiry on the free tier and send email alerts before expiration. Note: UptimeRobot offers SSL monitoring only on the paid (PRO) plan, and Healthchecks.io does not monitor certificates at all (it is for cron monitoring).
